United Methodist Women

is a community of women working together focusing on the mission outreach of the Church. It seeks to develop a creative, supportive fellowship which celebrates the joys and responds to the hurts and pain of others.  Emphasis is on prayer and Bible study, providing opportunities for spiritual growth. First Methodist's UMW joins with women worldwide to minister to women and children in need.
In addition to monthly circle meetings, the UMW serve as hostesses for special programs throughout the year. They sponsor a Church-wide Bazaar every other year with proceeds going to local and world missions.  In addition, they have a giant Yard Sale in conjunction with the downtown Fall Festival, with proceeds again going to missions.

There are currently six circles that make up the unit of the FUMC's United Methodist Women.  The circles meet at various times and on various days in an attempt to accommodate the needs of all women in our church. For information on the individual groups, please pick up a United Methodist Women brochure which can be found in the Sanctuary or contact Susan Russell at 334-393-4294.

Adult Sunday School Classes

The Christian life was never meant to be lived alone, yet many Christians have chosen to be uninvolved in the lives of other believers. Sunday school classes and small groups are usually a great means of establishing very close knit friends that share life together, typically revolving around similar interests and/or age. These groups are able to encourage one another, pray together, study together, hang out on a regular basis, hold each other accountable, and become a community of believers that are trying their best to fulfill the commands of Jesus. If believers are not living in fellowship with others, there may not be anyone to pick them up when there is a need.

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:24-25).

There are several adult Sunday School Classes from which to attend.  All classes begin at 9:55.  Prior to Sunday School, coffee and doughnuts are served in the Old Fellowship Hall at 9:30.  Join us and find the class for you!

Doc Walding, Room 213: Our purpose is to draw closer to God and to one another, to become more like Christ through studying His word, fellowshipping with one another in and out of church, supporting one another in the happy times and in the not-so-happy time, and serving others.  We enjoy teachings from one of the David C. Cook series.  Several members share teaching responsibilities.  We enjoy discussing how the teachings apply to today's life.  We also enjoy periodic social gatherings in members' homes as well as local eateries.  People of all ages and stages are welcome here.  Currently we range in age from the late 40's to mid 60's.

Edna Guice Class, Room 101:  The Edna Guice Sunday School class is a wonderful group of active senior citizens who love the Lord and delight in the weekly fellowship of sharing, studying and serving God together.  We start our morning with music and hymns of our choice and then we share information regarding the comings and goings of our busy class members.  We also have a prayer chain so we may keep informed of each other during the week.  We are fortunate to have a truly talented Sunday School teacher in Jane King.  Their extensive travels have brought many unique experiences that she is able to incorporate into the lesson as she shares God’s word with us.  We also have an array of talented substitute teachers,  who are always willing to step in at a moment’s notice. We enjoy social occasions outside of church, getting together as a class or in small groups.  Of course, this usually involves food.  A very wise man once told me that a Methodist was not allowed into heaven without a potluck dish!  We would like to extend an invitation to all of you to share in the love of God through the warm, compassionate and caring members of the Edna Guice class.

The Explorers, Room 214: The Explorers class was formed in 1996 as the Young Adult Class by Rainer and Vonda Cotter.  Rainer Cotter remains the teacher and leads an open discussion Bible based Sunday School class.  The Explorers Class does not normally use the traditional Adult Sunday School Lessons. Through the years they have done in depth studies of various books of the Bible and tend to focus more on lessons that affect everyday life.  The members are encouraged to participate in the class discussions, which makes the class unique.  The class now ranges in age from the 20’s to the 40’s.  This blend of ages makes the discussions very valuable – applying the Bible Lessons to today’s experiences for all ages.  The members encourage and support each other, not only through participation in class, but also through outside social gatherings and enjoy fellowship together.  There is a place for you in the Explorers class…come explore the Bible with us

New Life, Room 208: New  Life is a class of inter-generational singles and couples. We have young people, we have seniors.  We use the Adult International Study Series from Cokesbury.  Each member has a study guide and is encouraged to study the lesson during the week.  The guide has a daily scripture reading that relates to the following Sunday’s lesson. We begin our class with announcements and prayer requests.  We pray, then study the Word together.  Teachers rotate and the class engages in very lively discussions!  If you stay in the class for seven years, you will have studied the entire Bible!  Several fun socials are planned throughout the year.

Jeterites, Room 211: The purposes of the Jeterite Sunday School class are to praise God, to pray, to study God’s Word, to fellowship and to serve others – all in a family-like atmosphere.  Helpful skills for being a Jeterite are: hearing God’s message, reading God’s Word and serving others.  Jeterites also enjoy fellowship at covered dish dinners, Jeterites Night Out and out of town retreats.  Class mentors are Charles and Peggy Jeter, 347-6306, jeter@entercomp.com

Harbourlites, Room 107: The Harbourlite class was organized in 1955 by the wife of Rev. Harbor.  The success of the class has been attributed to the love and care its members give and receive from one another.  Members range in age.

DVD Class (Disciples Venturing Deeper): Our purpose as the DVD class is two-fold.  The first part is described in our name.  We are Disciples Venturing Deeper.  We are striving to go deeper in our walk with Christ, becoming more like Him.  Our second purpose is to love and care for each other as Christ loves and cares for us.  Our class is a place where members and visitors alike feel welcomed, accepted and safe to be real (who they really are.)  Members of this class enjoy small group discussion, laughing, eating together, playing games and frequent opportunities for fellowship.  We range in age from 20’s and up. Our classroom is located behind the sanctuary.  Danny & Ashley Whitaker are the class representatives.

Lifesong Class:  We are SINGLES, SPARES & PAIRS and are named after the Casting Crowns hit song “LifeSong.”  Our purpose is to help you bring your whole “LifeSong” to Jesus, not just  Sunday mornings. We are also aligned with New Connection.  We begin about 10 or 15 minutes after the New Connection Service, allowing members time for fellowship with others and time to enjoy some coffee or cappuccino.  Class members range in age from 20 and up. We cater to singles, college students and couples.  Our current study beginning in March 2008 uses the Adult Bible Study series. The current series is "God, The People and The Covenant." Walk-ins are welcome in our class. We meet downstairs in the Old Fellowship Hall.  Join us!  Carol Hosley is the class contact at "carolj1228@aol.com," 334-393-8969.
